Ray of Light Theatre puts on some incredible shows. When working for them, I had a great time with a particularly fun and rigorous rehearsal process and series of performances. However, they pay so little that it feels borderline insulting.
For years, I’ve consistently loved ROLT’s choice of shows and their bold approach to their material. Actually working there was an exciting, high-intensity challenge that yielded some very powerful (and creative) work.
I will note that for some auditions over the years, I’ve been called in upwards of 3 times before getting confirmation one way or another on casting for a role. I went with it at the time, but I look back frustrated by the misuse of my time.
And of course, the pay. Several years ago the pay was only $100 stipend for a full production. I believe it has increased to several hundred dollars… but still, FAR below SF minimum wage. I am particularly chagrined by this becasuse of the incredibly high production value of the shows they put on. Their sets, lighting, etc. are so high quality that it’s hard not to notice a disparity of where the pay is beging sent–not to the performers.
