Does local SEO actually work for small businesses or is it just hype?

So, I’ve been kind of sitting with this for a while, and I just decided ok allow enough and ask for the truth sooner or later. I run a small business in Bristol, and I’ve got an internet site… yeah it’s a bit redundant now. It’s been living for two years, and honestly it produces nothing. No queries, no real Google visibility, it just feels like it’s full of wasted domains, like, true. One person on my website commented that I should look mainly at an seo agency bristol, and the whole local attitude kind of pulls me in. It feels more personal you know. As an alternative, I want to pay a team that can communicate with me properly, instead of handing money to some huge company that has tons of customers and basically doesn’t remember my name. But I keep hearing the mixed story. Some people say it was exhausting, others say they paid for months and nothing really shifted at all. So, how do you even tell the difference between a decent outfit that just takes a while, and one that just grabs your cash then sends you this hard monthly schedule full of numbers that don’t mean anything at all. None of it, at all. Also, with a site that currently has zero presence, is SEO realistic or do you need it to already have some foundation in the space before it’s actually worth spending on? I’m not asking for support from everyone, I’m just trying to get open stories from people who have clearly been through it, good stories or bad ones both. And if you were starting from scratch, what else would you do, besides SEO?
