Lamont, Hanley & Associates keeps calling me. How do I settle before they garnish my wages?

I’ll try to keep this short. I fell behind on a credit card debt a couple years ago. Now Lamont, Hanley & Associates is calling me nonstop. From what I can tell, they are a debt collection law firm. I'm terrified they are going to sue me and start taking money from my paycheck.

I actually want to pay something to make this go away, but I can't afford the full amount. I read online that you can negotiate a debt settlement with them, but I have no idea how to start that conversation. Do I call them? Do I wait for a letter? I'm also worried that even if I settle, my credit will be ruined anyway.

The bigger fear is wage garnishment. I work hourly and have a family to support. If they take a chunk of my check, I'm sunk. Has anyone successfully stopped a garnishment from this firm? Or settled a debt for less than half of what was owed?

I found this article that explains some strategies, but I want to hear from real people. What actually worked for you? Did you need to hire a lawyer or can you handle this yourself?

Any advice is appreciated. I'm losing sleep over this.

Although that provides the idea of being amazing, I am still not really sure if I enjoy it. In any case, I will investigate it further and make a decision eventually!  ginger ale
