The audition process was fairly good. 5 minute slot to sing. A slotted callback for the roles you are being seen for.
Rehearsal process is months long, I mean like 4-6 months. About a month into rehearsal I was contacted by the director and was told, if I didn’t get my acting together I would be dropped from the show because to her, it felt that I didn’t care. I was casted a role about 20-30 year older than I was at the time and didn’t know how to quite get the physicality down.
She also expected me to be memorized before ever working on scenes without ever telling me that was the expectation. I was told that I wasn’t a good actor or singer because I couldn’t automatically whip out what she needed . I just didn’t have the life experience or sounds in me yet.
She talked me in to taking vocal lessons with her (at charge) to get the music down for the show and then repeatedly told me I wasn’t a good singer and ended up tracking my harmonies with other singers. So hundred of dollars down the drain to not use my voice in all the things I learned.
There is also just a toxic environment with this company in general. I’ve heard the artistic director tell actors they won’t be cast in leads until they’ve lost weight. Not to mention, doing a production of West Side Story and putting their Maria in brown-face and fully supporting doing so.
